WHITE COCONUT CHUTNEY🥥 It is a moment of pride for Indian Americans, Californians and Tamilians especially, as Kamala Harris, the first Indian senator, who is born in Oakland and whose mother Shyamala Gopalan hails from Tamil Nadu, has been nominated as the vice presidential candidate by the U.S. Democratic party👏. Hearty wishes to her! I’m a big fan of her and got a chance to see her up close just last year at SF Pride Parade.

Today I tried the white coconut chutney, Tamilian style, and after looking through many recipes, the one that felt right was the Coconut chutney recipe I found on the blog of kannammacooks . I think the secret ingredient is the sesame oil tempering that gives it the taste and flavor I have found in many South Indian restaurants. This chutney makes the perfect pairing primarily for Dosa, Idli and Vada.
.
INGREDIENTS:
1/3 cup shredded coconut
2 tsp fried chana dal
2 green chillies
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp tamarind paate
one garlic clove
TEMPERING:
1 tsp sesame oil
1/4 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 tsp urad dal
a pinch of asafetida
5-6 curry leaves
.
STEPS:
1. Add all the ingredients to blender and use water as needed to blend smooth.
2. Add sesame oil in a pan. When hot add tempering ingredients one by one starting with mustard seeds.
3. Add the tempering to the chutney.
